Andrewes House
Barbican Estate
The Brief

For the renovation of this original type 23 flat with barrel vaulted ceiling, the client had a specific brief:

one . kitchen
Remove walls enlosing kitchen in order to enlarge living space. Remove all kitchen units, Garchey and ventilation system. If feasible, make a mezzanine sleeping space above kitchen. Create an L-shaped kitchen with all appliances integrated, making a seamless design. Think New York minimal kitchens. Possible use of wood detailing to soften effect.

two . bathroom
Remove original bathroom and soften the look. Install a wooden bath, client already selected model from Scottish company Design a long surface for two basins including some storage with mirrors over. Walls and floor to be finished in limestone effect tile. Add Decorative lighting.

three . cloakroom/wc
To remove Barbican basin and install a small hand basin. Create wood panelling behind wc

The Result

Listed building consent was applied for and granted to remove the kitchen walls but it was found not to be feasible to build a mezzanine level.

On this project the client was very involved in all aspects of the design, constantly feeding new suggestions into the process.

The elegant Rosemarkie Iroko bath set the scene in the bathroom. We designed a washstand with storage in Iroko to be manufactured by the bath company. The limestone basins and tiling completed the look. We raised the tile height to create a light baffle to uplight the vaulted ceiling. In the WC we removed asbestos panels and installed two bespoke Iroko panels.

We continued the wood theme from the bathroom through into the white handleless kitchen, using a lovely soft wood tile, Bosco Pino, on the floor and splashback, and a bespoke wood panel to match this on the end oven housing. The aim was to meld the kitchen into the room.

The Kashmir white work surface has a subtle grey/brown vein running through it.

We again up lit the vaulting with a baffle on the back of the wall units in the kitchen to accentuate the vertical space.
