Ben Jonson
Barbican Estate
The Brief

Ben Jonson House is a three storey terrace flat. The flat to be renovated in two stages whilst the client was away on business and then on a family holiday. The client's requirements were:

one.bathroom
Client wished to keep the original bath but update the rest of the room with the emphasis on improved lighting and storage.

two.kitchen
To transform with white handleless units and improved access: the cupboards to contain draws and racking.

three.carpentry
Extend the wardrobe on the fifth floor bedroom and build cupboards under stairs to house a washing machine and dryer.

four
Repair all damaged window architraves and open stairs.

five
Decorate and repair plaster work.

six
Carpet throughout.

The Result

For the bathroom, the client chose a medium-size tile with a linear texture which we used on all surfaces except the floor. The original bath was re-enamelled to ensure it blended with the new materials. A short projection Duravit wc was chosen to allow better access to the under basin drawers and cupboard. A larger mirror with a baffled light was selected to provide additional illumination over the basin and to open up the space.

We completely stripped out the kitchen, removing Garchey and ventilation system. We installed custom-built gloss handleless units with Corian worktops and a glass splashback, all contributing to the result of a clean and contemporary kitchen space.

My French polisher did an amazing job on the restoration of all the original woodwork, bringing it back to the original colouring. A specialist metal fabricator restored the damaged balustrade.
